By Masked Ice Raider

Well its official, we have an All-American! Yesterday #19 Jerrin Ashford of the Tech Hockey Ice Raider hockey team was selected as a second team All-Western Conference-All American forward for the 2007-2008 season. Jerrin led all offensive categories for the Ice Raider squad and finished 4th in the country in scoring and points. Ashford was chosen this season as Tech Hockey's Offensive player of the year, he was also the co-MVP along with teammate Michael Pruneau for this seasons Big XII Championship Tournament. Ashford is a freshman a Texas Tech University and Coach Fioroni expects much from this young Ice Raider player; "Jerrin is a very gifted hockey player, he is not just an offensive threat on the ice, he was probably one of our best all around players both defensively and offensively. He is a very smart player on the ice and reads the game very well, one of the best special team players we have. I am looking forward to some great times for Jerrin and his involvement with this Tech Hockey program." #19 Ashford was very excited as well; "I am very honored that the ACHA chose me as an All-American. Our team had a very successful season and I was just glad to be a part of it, I am looking forward to making a serious run at the National Championships this year and am looking forward to defending our Big XII title here in Lubbock at the Raider Dome."

(Jerrin joins teammate #7 Kevin Mayoux as the only Tech Hockey All-American player selections, as Mayoux was a Second Team All-American last season as well. Kevin enjoyed a very successful season for Tech too as he was the only player from Tech and all Texas Universities to be selected to the first ever ACHA DII Select Team that competed over-seas this past Christmas and went a remarkably perfect 5-0. Congratulations to Jerrin and Kevin on their accomplishments, Texas Tech University and the Tech Hockey program salute you both on your great accomplishments.) GO ICE RAIDER HOCKEY!

Myself being a member of the voting committee gives us a chance to make college hockey the best it possibly can be by voting on new and exciting rules that we will be adapting from the NHL and incorporating them into our style of game," quotes an excited Coach Fioroni. Coach Goicoechea sees other possibilities that will really benefit Tech Hockey and ice skating in general from the conference; "We are able to meet the best hockey and ice skating vendors and educate ourselves on all of the new and improved equipment, materials and items that will be utilized to insure that our program and facility runs at the best levels it can, I am looking forward to bettering our program and bettering the well being of all hockey and ice skating in Lubbock and at Texas Tech." quotes Coach Gokes. University of Texas Tucks Horns and Runs For Home After Friday Night Victory
Tech Wins Over UT
January 28, 2008
By Masked Ice Raider

Friday, January.25th @ 7pm
The Hanson Brothers were there in full force Friday night as they assisted the Texas Tech hockey team in laying down a good old fashioned southern spanking on the Longhorns of Texas, with a Tech Hockey and now new ACHA D II attendance record of 4,324 at the Raider Dome. Jeff and Steve Hanson brought the crowd to their feet as they put on a great show to start the game. Along side them as the "Third Hanson" brother was Coach Paul Fioroni and auction winner Dakota Nicholson.

The Red Raider squad would not let down their Red and Black faithful as they exploded for 7 unanswered goals and an impressive 11-1 victory, out-shooting the Longhorns 64-21. The Red Raiders would thrive off of the electric college atmosphere as the Texas Tech Saddle Tramps, the Texas Tech Spirit Squad and the amazing Court Jesters who kept the energy alive with their great school music, helped fuel a large and boisterous crowd. Kevin Mayoux would strike first for the Red Raiders on the Power Play off a great passing play from Ashford and Brown. Newcomer Ryan Danahy would notch his first as a Red Raider and Mayoux would again add another to take a 3-0 lead going into the second. It was all Captain John Griffith, Ashford and Larney in the second who would all have multiple point performances in the period, with Larney adding 2, Ashford snatching a pair and Griffith adding 1 and a pair of helpers. Tech would go up 8-1 heading into the third and would not look back. The third saw some big hits and some close calls, but again the Red Raiders would come out scoring. Ryan Brown would snipe early in the third and both Lomax and Ashford would follow it up with goals of their own. Ashford's third of the game with three minutes remaining would give him his hat-trick and seal his 6 point performance. (3g, 3a) Other players who had a multiple point night were Mayoux (2g, 2a), J.P. Pruneau (4a), Brown (1g, 3a), Lomax with (1g, 2a), Griffith (1g,2a), Larney with 2g and Gothe with 3 helpers.

Coach Fioroni was very happy with his teams performance; "When you have an amazing crowd like we did, I mean a great college atmosphere with the band playing and everything else, its hard to not get up for it. I mean it was UT for goodness sake, and we just punished them shift after shift. I want to thank the Hanson Brothers, the Court Jesters, the Saddle Tramps, the Spirit Squad and our amazing crowd for making history and making it such an enjoyable atmosphere for everyone", quoted and elated Fioroni. Veteran captain J.P. Pruneau was just in awe; "It was so incredible to play in front of such an awesome crowd and atmosphere, and more importantly to beat UT in front of our great fans. I am really looking forward to Boston College coming in and getting the same atmosphere that UT got", says an ecstatic Pruneau. Tech would look to keep their 4 game winning streak intact as they faced UT Saturday night at 7pm.

Saturday, January.26 @ 7pm
Well the Tech Hockey team was there, the Tech Hockey Fans were there.....but the Longhorns?? Were no where to be found!! The University of Texas Hockey team did something that no one would of thought, they returned home to Austin and forfeited the game Saturday night and failed to inform Coach Fioroni and the Tech staff until 2 hours prior to the start of the game. Coach Fioroni was contacted at 5:05pm Saturday afternoon by UT coach Keith O'Brien, who then continues to tell Coach that he was already in Dallas and that UT was not playing and had left to go home. Coach Fioroni was amazed and disturbed at this terrible action that the Longhorn coaching staff decided to take; "I mean what the heck were they thinking? Its how they handled it that infuriates me and my staff and players. To call 2 hours before the drop of a puck? Why didn't they contact us that morning, I am sure something could of been worked out, I am sure they will be punished by the decision that they made." Quoted an very angry Fioroni.

The Longhorns could be facing a law suit due to lost revenue against the Tech Hockey team. Tech Hockey lost thousands of dollars Saturday night due to the premature cancellation and lost many fans, and incurred many game costs that the Texas club hockey team may be responsible for. V.P. of Operations Mike Goicoechea was disgusted to say the least; "How can you quit like that? Our players would never allow such a thing to happen, but more importantly our coaching staff would not of let this happen. I hope that the ACHA will act accordingly and I hope the Texas team truly understands what they have done and make amends for it," quotes Goicoechea.

Even with the no show by the Texas hockey team, the Tech faithful stayed and enjoyed a great game put on by the Tech Hockey squad. Coach Fioroni figured; "If the fans were staying then we were going to give them a game." The Tech team was split up and the first ever White and Black game took place at the City Bank Coliseum. The fans were given free admission, and free skating after the game and they all had a blast. One of the Tech Hockey fans commented on the event; "We just appreciate all that Tech Hockey has done and we are here to support those boys regardless if UT was here or not. To be honest it was a better game to watch our boys play each other then probably watch us beat UT again." The ACHA will be overseeing the forfeit and has informed Coach Fioroni that the proper actions will be taken against UT. The Tech hockey program has already started putting together the documents needed to begin possible actions against the Longhorn hockey team and hopes that it will be settled immediately and in good nature.

Tech Hockey garners a victory off of the forfeit and betters their record to an impressive 19-11-3, going 13-2-1 at home. Tech Hockey will now prepare for the upcoming BIG XII Tournament at Kansas as they open Big XII play against Nebraska at 4:30pm on Friday, the 1st of February. Tech will look to bring home the Big XII trophy and show it off in front of the Red and Black fans on Fan Appreciation night, Friday the 8th of February against Boston College at 7pm. Everyone Gets In On Tech Wins Over UNM
Tech Wins Over UNM
January 15, 2008
By Masked Ice Raider

Friday, January.18th, 2008 @ UNM 8pm
This weekend the Red Raiders made the short drive west to their neighboring state rivals the University of New Mexico as they posted two solid victories over a struggling Lobo hockey program. Tech would get a victory on Friday night over the Lobo's with a 5-3 decision, as the UNM goaltender # 1 Brad Tomesson would prove to be quite the problem for the high scoring Red Raiders as he was able to stop 55 of the 60 shots he faced and make the game interesting. The Red Raiders ended up out-shooting the Lobo's 60-18 on strong play again by Stang, Ashford and Shirley which seemed to be the difference in the game; "These are games we must absolutely dominate, we ran into a hot goalie, but the bottom line is we must bury these weaker teams", Quoted a frustrated #19 Jerrin Ashford. Shirley got his second game winning goal in as many games and was not pleased with the victory as well; "Our goal is Regionals, and teams like this we have to blow out of our way, we cant make them a game, period!", Quotes #55 Shirley. Coach Fioroni finds that these games create bad habits, but in the end are better than not playing at all; "Playing these struggling teams are good and bad. I believe that players create bad habits by getting lazy playing weaker teams, but on the other hand players that have not seen as much ice time get a chance to show their stuff." Coach Fioroni rotated all of the rostered Tech goalies throughout the game and felt that they all did an excellent job.

Saturday, January.19th, 2008 @ UNM 8pm
The second come around against the Lobo's would prove to be a much better turnout for the Red Raider hockey team as they posted a much stronger victory with a 10-2 win and again dominated in the shots category, out-shooting the Lobo's 71-28. Again all Tech goalies got a chance to shine in the pipes as #30 Pruneau continued his shutout streak to 2 periods allowing nothing against, both #1 Skupien and #31 Hawronsky let a goal in each period respectfully. Many Red Raider hockey players had multiple point nights (#19-2g/1a, #55-2g/2a, #11-1g/2a, #18-1g/3a and #7-1g/3a). Captain John Griffith was glad to be back in the line-up after missing Fridays contest as he potted a goal , along with two helpers; "It was nice to be back in the line-up and put up a strong victory together after last nights weak performance. We have got to focus on Regionals and our ranked opponents, again focus is key against these weaker teams and we must stay within the systems", Quotes a travel weary Griffith. After this UNM weekend the Red Raiders improve their record to 17-11-3 and hope to add to the win category against UT at home.

The Tech hockey squad will head back to the Hub City for a long awaited home stand against the rival University of Texas Longhorns. Tech holds a 6-1 record against UT under Coach Fioroni and looks to punish the Longhorns at home after a very dramatic weekend in Austin, TX earlier in the season. Friday nights game is a 7pm start time and the Red Raider hockey nation welcomes the Slap-shot "Hanson Brothers" to the City Bank Coliseum, along with the possibility of trying to break the Division 2 ACHA attendance record. Saturday night is also slotted for a 7pm tilt against the Horns, as Tech will host the first ever "Red Raider Black-Out Night" at the Raider Dome. Any Tech Hockey fan wearing black will receive 1$ off his or hers admission, so lets drown those Orange Horns in a Sea of Black Red Raider Power!!

Red Raiders Ride Stang and Ashford Wave at San Jose GoldRush Tournament
GoldRush Tournament
January 15, 2008
By Masked Ice Raider

Thursday, January.10th, 2008, 7pm @ SJST
The Tech Hockey squad turned some heads on the West Coast as they had three very competitive games against top ranked #4 Wagner College from New York, #2 Eastern Washington University and #8 San Jose State University. Tech opened the 8th Annual GoldRush tournament against the hometown team SJST. Tech dominated the flow of the entire game out-shooting their west coast opponents and out chancing them. Tech would carry the lead the entire game, but would fall short in an 8-6 loss to SJST as they potted an empty netter to seal the victory. Coach Fioroni was pleased with his teams play, but upset with the goal-tending; "Micheal Pruneau is a great goalie, but tonight he was not. I felt he was not in it and decided to give him a rest in the third and let Jason Hawronsky take over", quoted Coach. "In games like these your goalie must be your best player, Micheal is very competitive and will bounce back from this loss with ease." Coach Fioroni now sets his teams sights on the ACHA powerhouse EWU.

Friday, January.11th, 2008, 10:45pm vs EWU @ SJ
Texas Tech Hockey welcomed new comer Matt Stang to the line-up as the Red Raiders took on the top ranked Eastern Washington University in the late game. Tech again got on the board first for the second consecutive game as Matt Stang welcomed himself to the ACHA with his first goal, making it a 1-0 lead for the Red Raiders. EWU would bounce back and tie the game before the period was out, sending a great skating and western style hockey game into the second. EWU then would score a Power-play goal in the second and take a 2-1 lead going into the third. Again Tech would lose their edge as EWU would score 2 unanswered goals and go onto score an empty netter as they took a 5-2 victory from the grasps of Tech; "We were right there with them the whole game, we just did not want it more. Playing top teams like EWU, you better show up every shift or they will turn it on you in the blink of an eye." Quotes a frustrated Coach Fioroni. Tech would look to salvage a win against unbeaten Wagner, as Wagner had already clinched the top record of the Goldrush tournament by beating SJST and EWU previously.

Saturday, January.12th, 2008, 9:45pm vs Wagner @ SJ
Texas Tech would waste no time in scoring the first goal of the game as they have done in the previous two. # 19 Jerrin Ashford let a rocket go from outside the blue line to put the Red Raiders up 1-0. Tech would score again off a # 10 Matt Stang goal on the Power Play to take a 2-0 lead, the goal was Stang's third in just two games. Wagner would answer back, making it 2-1. That would not be the end of scoring in the first as Tech and # 4 ranked Wagner would score a total of 6 more goals before the period was out. Tech would enter the second with a 5-4 lead and would answer again with another goal from Stang to take a 6-4 lead into the third. Wagner would wake up and tie the game up at 6 with just 5 minutes left in the game, but # 55 Wes Shirley would put a stop to that. Shirley scored the game winning 7th goal, his third of the game to give him his hat-trick and the # 1 star of the game. Goaltender Michael Pruneau made some incredible saves throughout the third to keep his Red Raiders alive for the huge victory; "These guys really showed up tonight, all of them. They showed that we can can compete and beat the top teams in the country. This is one of the biggest victories for our young program, I think teams will now finally give us the respect that we deserve", quotes an elated Coach Fioroni. With that win, the Red Raiders biggest against a top ranked opponent (# 4 Wagner College), Texas Tech should move up in the rankings considerably with their great showings at the Goldrush. #19 Ashford and # 10 Stang would lead all Red Raiders in scoring with Stang-4g-4a and Ashford-6g-6a.

Stay tuned as your Red Raider Hockey team looks to take on the University of New Mexico this upcoming weekend in Albuquerque, with both Friday the 18th and Saturday the 19th games at 8pm at the Outpost Ice Arena. Texas Tech Hockey will return to Lubbock for their huge rival weekend against the University of Texas as Slap-shots Hanson Brother's will be in town as well. Games are slotted for a 7pm start time for both Friday, January.25th and Saturday, January.26th. Texas Tech Hockey Plays with the Juniors

January 7, 2008
By Masked Ice Raider

Texas Tech took some time off with two pairs of home games against the top teams from the WSHL Junior league as they faced off against the Tulsa Rampage and the El Paso Rhinos. This was a great experience for the WSHL teams to come to Texas Tech and check out the university and the hockey program. Coach Fioroni looks forward to entertaining these Junior programs in the future as he would like to recruit their top players; "This is a great way to get some very competitive hockey games in, give our fans a different type of game and really take a look at the top prospects of this league that will be going on to the university level", quoted an excited Coach Fioroni.

# 13 Texas Tech is now looking forward to the big Goldrush tournament in San Jose, CA where they will face off against top ranked # 2 Eastern Washington, # 4 Wagner College and # 8 San Jose State University.

RED RAIDERS CAPTURE FIRST EVER AMERICAN AIRLINES CENTER BIG XII CHALLENGE CUP OVER STATE RIVALS TEXAS A&M
TTU vs. A&M
December 24, 2007
By Masked Ice Raider

The Red Raider and Aggie faithful came out in numbers at the American Airlines Center to support their school's teams on to victory Sunday afternoon in Dallas, Texas. With a crowd pushing 4,000 plus in the AAC the Red Raiders knew that they could not disappoint. Texas Tech would strike first as # 18 Dallas native Ryan Brown would put A&M on their heals right away with a sweet wrist shot inside the blue-line. Goalie # 30 Michael Pruneau would put a show of his own on with acrobatic saves that made him look like Montreal hometown hero Patrick Roy, keeping the Aggie's at bay. Tech would take their 2-1 lead into the second as the Aggie's would come on strong, but Michael Pruneau would have none of that and turned all that they dished to him aside. Tech again would score in the third taking a 3-1 lead, ACHA Select star # 7 Kevin Mayoux would score the eventual game winner off of a rebound from Shirley in front of the A&M net to give Tech the victory. A&M would press hard and come within 1, but # 30 would shut the door on them. Texas Tech defeated the Texas A&M Aggie's 3-2 to claim the first ever AAC BIG XII CHALLENGE CUP in Dallas, Texas.

Texas Tech Hockey would like to thank the Dallas Stars for their great hospitality and to Texas A&M for making this a great event. Tech looks forward to defending their title next season against another possible BIG XII opponent at the AAC. GO RED RAIDER HOCKEY!!

TEXAS TECH HOCKEY START 2007-2008 season.....
Texas Tech VS. Oklahoma Sooners
October 1, 2007
By Masked Ice Raider

The Tech hockey program got a real taste of Big XII Competition as they played the Oklahoma Sooners D I program this past weekend. OU started Techs season off with back to back loss's, Tech has not allowed two consecutive losses since the October of 2006 season which came from Colorado and Colorado State.

The Red Raiders scored the first goal of the game and of the young Tech hockey 2007-2008 season as the leading scorer from last year Mayoux continued his goal scoring streak from the previous campaign. Jerrin Ashford would add another in the first, his first as a Red Raider hockey player as the Masked Men took the dressing room with a 2-1 lead. That would be all the Tech squad would see, as reality crept in and the 5th ranked Division I OU hockey team came to life. OU scored 8 unanswered goals, of which 6 were power play tallies crushing the Red Raider hockey team with a final score of 9-2. Goalie Michael Pruneau looked great as he was peppered in tight with 46 shots.

The second night was much better for the Red Raider hockey team as they came a little more prepared for the evenings battle with the Sooners. The score would stay tight as the game was hard fought and aggressive, a true Big XII match-up. OU again would take the lead on a power-play goal and then notch two more to take a 3 goal lead into the third. Mayoux would continue his goal streak as he potted the lone Red Raider goal to pull within 2 of the high flying Sooners. OU would again score 3 more power-play goals and take a 7-1 victory over the tired Tech team. The lack of ice time and practice was evident as the Red Raiders looked out of place at times. New comer goalie Mike Monk was also stellar between the pipes as he was able to stop 41 of 48 shots.

Coach Fioroni was not pleased with the weekends outcome, but understood the elements surrounding it; "It was obvious that OU has been skating and working together much longer than us, but the bottom line is you have to compete no matter what, and we just did not at times", quoted Coach. "I would really like to play them again later in the season when we have our legs and work ethic under us", says an optimistic Fioroni. Tech will set their sights for their upcoming home opening weekend against the Scream-in Eagles of North Texas, as the Red Raiders look to open up at their new home the Raider Dome on Friday at 7pm, and Sunday at noon. Get out and support your Red Raider hockey team as they look to even their record to 2-2 against the Mean Green!

Tech hockey rebounded with 2 straight victories
Tech vs. UNT
October 1, 2007
By the Ice-Raider Hockey Writer

Tech hockey rebounded with 2 straight victories over North Texas after dropping 2 straight to Division I OU. Tech won 11-5 Saturday, this was the remake game from Friday nights cancellation due to unsafe ice conditions. The day belonged to Wes Shirley as he posted 3 goals/1 assist on Saturdays victory, as the Red Raiders out-shot UNT 57-31.

The Sunday afternoon matinee against UNT again was a good old fashioned Red Raider shoot out. With the high scoring Red Raiders out shooting the Screaming Eagles again by a large 53-24 margin, #55 Shirley would lead the way with a another 3 goal performance, while also adding 2 helpers. Shirley would complete the game with a one punch knockout to UNT's # 71 Scott Eskinozi to give him the Gordie Howe hat-trick as well. Jerrin Ashford #19 had a great game receiving first star honors with his 3 goal and 4 assists breakout game. Tech finished the Mean Green off with a 14-4 victory.

The Red Raiders pull their record to 2-2 and gear up for their Big XII rival the Aggie's this Friday at 7pm at the Raider Dome. Ex-Cotton King All-Star defense-man Arturs Kupaks will be at the helm coaching A&M this season, it should set up for a great weekend of Big XII hockey. The second match will be Sunday at 1pm. Tickets are 5 dollars, 2 dollars for students and kids under 8 are free. We look forward to seeing everyone out this Homecoming weekend as Tech Hockey takes on A&M!!
